The air in the narrow crevice was thick with the scent of damp earth and something acrid, like burnt sulfur. It clung to my tongue, a constant reminder of the peril that lay just beyond the rough-hewn stone walls of our hiding place. Outside, the guttural snarls of kobold sentries echoed, their torchlight casting flickering, dancing shadows against the cave mouth. Each scrape of clawed feet, each sharp bark of alarm, sent a fresh wave of adrenaline through me, tightening my chest. I pressed myself further into the cold stone, trying to become one with it, praying it would swallow me whole and keep me hidden from their prying eyes.

Beside me, Bowen moved with a quiet grace that belied the tension coiled in his muscles. His sword was a dark silhouette against the dim light, his breathing steady, a comforting rhythm in the symphony of my own ragged breaths. I could feel his presence, a solid, unwavering force that had become a beacon for me on this treacherous journey. It was a strange dichotomy, this fear that gnawed at me, the primal instinct to flee, and the profound sense of safety I found in his proximity.

We had been crouched in this cramped space for what felt like hours, the kobold patrol’s route an agonizingly slow circuit around the dragon’s lair. Kael, with his uncanny knowledge of these subterranean tunnels, had led us here, a supposed shortcut to avoid the main guard. But shortcuts, I was learning, often led to the most unexpected detours, and this one had landed us in a precarious stalemate. Lyra and Roric were further back in the cave, their hushed whispers a faint murmur that did little to soothe my frayed nerves.
