The Dragon's Lair Approaches

The air itself tasted of ash and brimstone, a dry, choking rasp that clung to the back of my throat. It was a scent that spoke of heat, of molten rock, of a creature born of fire. We had entered Ignis’s domain, and the landscape offered no welcome. Gone were the whispering pines and the babbling brooks of the foothills; here, the earth bled a sickly, ochre hue, cracked and fissured like ancient, arthritic bones. The contact was fleeting, a mere graze, yet it sent a jolt through me, a warmth that had nothing to do with the oppressive heat radiating from the earth. I risked a glance at him. His brow was furrowed in concentration, his jaw set, but his eyes, when they met mine, held a quiet understanding, a shared acknowledgment of the peril we faced and the strange, burgeoning connection between us.
