The air in the small clearing hung thick and heavy, not just with the scent of pine needles and damp earth, but with an unspoken tension that had been simmering for days. We had made camp near a gurgling stream, the water a silver ribbon under the pale moonlight, a stark contrast to the darkness that had begun to unfurl within our small fellowship. Lyra, ever the beacon of light, hummed a cheerful, albeit slightly off-key, tune as she tended to a small fire, its flames dancing with a restless energy. Roric sat by the embers, his face a mask of stoic contemplation, his gaze distant, lost in memories I suspected were as grim as the shadows that clung to the ancient trees. Bowen, bless his steady heart, was sharpening his sword, the rhythmic scrape of steel against stone a comforting sound in the otherwise unsettling quiet.

And then there was Kael. He had been unusually withdrawn, his eyes, usually sharp and observant, now seemed to hold a feverish gleam, fixed on something far beyond the flickering firelight. He had been poring over a tattered scroll, its parchment brittle with age, muttering to himself in a language I didn't understand. I’d tried to engage him earlier, asking about the symbols, but he’d merely waved me away with a curt, “It is of no consequence to you, Marlee.” It was that dismissal, that further wall erected between us, that had settled a cold dread in my gut.

“Kael,” I began, my voice softer than I intended, trying to cut through the silence that felt like a physical weight. “Are you alright?”
