The culmination of every desperate scrounge, every whispered dream, every flicker of hope that had ignited in the shadowed corners of his alley existence. He stood now, not in the grimy comfort of his usual haunts, but under the blinding glare of a thousand lights, a lone feline against a formidable phalanx of culinary titans. His heart, a tiny, frantic drum against his ribs, pounded a rhythm of pure, unadulterated terror.

Beside him, Barnaby’s low growl was a steady anchor in the swirling storm of his anxiety. The dog’s massive frame, usually a comforting presence, seemed to radiate a nervous energy, his tail giving a single, almost imperceptible thump against the polished floor. He nudged Milo’s flank with his wet nose, a gesture of solidarity that spoke volumes more than any words could.

“Just breathe, sprout,” Barnaby rumbled, his voice a gravelly whisper that only Milo could hear. “You know the steps. You’ve got the flavors. They’re all just… humans. With big mouths.”
