It was a far cry from the simmering stews and aromatic broths that haunted his dreams, but hunger was a relentless master. Barnaby, a silhouette against the grimy brickwork, snuffled at a discarded crust of bread, his usual gruff demeanor softened by a shared gnawing emptiness. They were a peculiar pair, a symphony of fur and shadow, bound by the unspoken language of survival and a burgeoning, almost defiant, hope.

“Smells like despair and stale beer,” Barnaby grumbled, his voice a low rumble that vibrated through the damp concrete. He nudged the fish head with a calloused paw. “Yours, I presume?”

Milo offered a faint purr, a gesture of camaraderie more than agreement. He nudged the prize towards Barnaby. “A king’s feast,” he meowed, his voice still thin, a whisper against the city’s roar.
