The world had shifted. It wasn’t a gradual change, not like the slow creep of dawn or the fading of a summer day. It was an abrupt, violent tearing of the veil, a wrenching transformation that left me gasping for air that no longer felt necessary. My lungs burned with a phantom ache, my heart, once a reliable drumbeat, now beat with a frantic, alien rhythm, too fast, too strong. The taste in my mouth was coppery, metallic, a constant reminder of the night before, of Marcine’s desperate, accidental bite.

Fear, cold and sharp, had been my first companion. It had gnawed at me as I stared at my reflection, searching for the boy I knew, only to find a stranger with eyes that held a new, unsettling depth, a pallor that spoke of shadows and eternal night. The sun, my old friend, now felt like an enemy, its rays a searing threat. I’d retreated to my room, curtains drawn tight, the familiar comfort of my home now a cage.

But Marcine. She was there, a silken presence in the suffocating darkness. She didn’t scold me for my terror, didn’t dismiss my fear. Instead, she sat beside me, her cool hand a soothing balm on my fevered skin. Her eyes, usually pools of ancient mystery, were filled with a tenderness that cut through my panic.
