The world had tilted on its axis, and I was falling, tumbling through a darkness that was both terrifying and exhilarating. My own body felt alien, a vessel I no longer fully controlled. It started with my senses, a violent explosion of awareness. The faintest whisper of wind through the leaves outside my bedroom window was now a roar, the scent of damp earth from the garden below an intoxicating perfume. My heartbeat, once a steady rhythm, felt like a frantic drum against my ribs, each beat echoing with a strange, new power.
Panic clawed at my throat. I sat bolt upright in bed, my breath coming in ragged gasps. The familiar posters on my wall, the worn rug on the floor, all seemed sharper, more vibrant, bathed in a moonlight that felt unnaturally bright. And then there was the thirst. A deep, gnawing ache in my gut, a parched desert blooming behind my tongue. It wasn't like being thirsty for water; this was a hunger that screamed for something primal, something I didn't dare name.
My gaze fell to my hands. They looked the same, pale in the moonlight, but I could feel a tremor running through them, a coiled energy waiting to be unleashed. I flexed my fingers, and it was as if I could feel the very air around them, a subtle resistance, a tangible presence. My nails, I realized with a jolt, were a little longer, a little sharper.
