As Elara's shift concludes, a breathtaking spectacle appears. A streak of light, an asteroid, tears through the night sky, its fiery descent culminating in a crash in a nearby field. Wonder and a little fear spark within her.

The final fry basket clattered into the warming tray, its golden contents a testament to another busy shift. Elara wiped a bead of sweat from her brow, the familiar scent of fried potatoes and cleaning spray clinging to her uniform. The clock above the drive-thru window glowed 10:47 PM, a silent signal that freedom was just minutes away. She glanced out the window, the streetlights casting long, distorted shadows that danced with the passing headlights. It was a quiet night, the usual hum of the town a soft lullaby.

“Almost done, Elara!” Leo’s voice, a little muffled by the headset, cut through her thoughts. Her younger brother, bless his energetic heart, was still diligently cleaning the milkshake machine, his small frame moving with a determination that always made her smile. He’d been her shadow at McDonald’s for the past year, a willing accomplice in her quest to save up for that art scholarship.

“Just finishing up the last few tables,” she replied, her voice a little tired but warm. She grabbed her cleaning spray and a cloth, moving through the mostly empty dining area. The red vinyl booths gleamed under the fluorescent lights, each one a silent witness to countless hurried meals and late-night confessions. She hummed a little tune as she worked, her mind already drifting towards the quiet of her bedroom, the sketchbook waiting on her desk.
