Flipping Burgers, Dreaming Bigger
Elara clocks in for her evening shift at McDonald's. The familiar scent of fries and the rhythm of orders fill her senses as she works, her mind occasionally drifting to other possibilities beyond the diner.
The fluorescent lights of McDonald's hummed a familiar tune, a stark contrast to the gentle rustling of leaves Elara had heard just hours before. The air was thick with the comforting scent of frying potatoes and the sweet promise of milkshakes. “Order up, Elara!” Marco, her coworker, called out, sliding a tray laden with burgers and fries towards her. His voice, usually as boisterous as the lunchtime rush, was tinged with a slight weariness.
“Coming right up,” Elara replied, her fingers deftly assembling a Big Mac. The rhythmic slap of the patty, the squeeze of ketchup and mustard, the placement of pickles and onions – it was a dance she knew by heart. Each movement was precise, honed by weeks of practice. Yet, even as her hands worked on autopilot, her mind was a restless butterfly, flitting from the mundane tasks at hand to the vast unknown. She imagined the stars peeking out from behind the darkening sky, wondering if they held any answers to the quiet questions that had begun to stir within her.
“Rough day?” she asked Marco, handing him the completed order.
