The biting wind whipped Elara’s hair across her face, stinging her eyes as she stood on the precipice. Below, the churning grey sea mirrored the turmoil in her chest. Here, on this windswept cliff overlooking the rugged coastline of Cornwall, a name had finally solidified from the mist of whispers and half-truths: Thorne. Silas Thorne. The name felt like a jagged shard of glass in her throat. It had surfaced in the hushed archives of a forgotten library, a faded inscription on a weathered tombstone, and, most chillingly, in the sharp, calculating eyes of the man himself.

Silas Thorne. He’d offered a sardonic smile, a veiled threat disguised as courtesy. “Exploring your roots, Miss Vance? Be careful. Some roots run deep, and some are best left undisturbed.” His knowledge of my quest, of my very presence in that distant land, had been unnerving.
