Sunlight, strained through the dusty panes of the tall windows, painted golden stripes across the worn Persian rug. I sat across from him, my heart thrumming a nervous, excited cadence against my ribs. The brittle parchment lay between us, a relic unearthed from the depths of a forgotten archive, a whisper from a past I was desperate to hear.
“You said this was… significant,” I began, my voice barely a breath. The map, a delicate spiderweb of ink on vellum, had been the key.
