The Serpent's Pass was a place of jagged teeth and dizzying heights, where the wind howled like a hungry wolf and the very rocks seemed to whisper secrets. Luna, with Jasper padding faithfully at her side, felt a shiver trace its way down her spine, a feeling that had nothing to do with the biting mountain air. Elder Whisperwind had warned her of this place, of its deceptive nature, of how it preyed on the fears of those who dared to traverse it. “The path is not always what it appears, little one,” he had rumbled, his ancient eyes twinkling with a mixture of concern and knowing. “Trust your heart, and the moon’s gentle glow, for they will be your truest guides.”

As they ascended, the familiar scent of pine and damp earth began to give way to something else, something cloying and unnatural, like the sickly sweet perfume of wilting flowers. Wisps of mist, thicker than any fog Luna had ever encountered, coiled around them, obscuring the path ahead and muffling the sounds of their pawsteps. Jasper, usually so boisterous, was unusually quiet, his ears swiveling constantly, his tail tucked low.

“Are you alright, Jasper?” Luna whispered, her voice barely audible above the wind’s mournful cry.
