Elshaday traced the delicate curl of the ink, a whisper of a vine that climbed the very edge of the page. It was more than just a doodle; it felt like a sigh captured in graphite, a secret shared with the paper. The attic, usually a place of dusty quiet, hummed with a new kind of energy whenever she was there, a resonance that seemed to emanate from the stacks of forgotten books and brittle documents. Her grandmother Anya had always called it a place of ‘remembering,’ but Elshaday was beginning to suspect it was a place of ‘speaking,’ too, just in a language she was only just learning to hear.

Today, the whisper was particularly insistent. It was in the footer of an old ledger, a faint, spidery mark that looked like a tiny, sleeping cat. Elshaday leaned closer, her breath warm against the aged paper. She remembered seeing Anya’s fingers hover over similar marks, a subtle tremor in her hand, a faraway look in her eyes. Anya never spoke of these symbols, but Elshaday felt their power, a quiet hum beneath the surface of everyday things.

“What are you looking at, little sprout?” Anya’s voice, soft as falling snow, startled Elshaday. She hadn’t heard her grandmother ascend the creaking stairs.
