The Footer's Whisper

Elshaday traced the faint, spidery lines at the bottom of the page. They weren’t just decorative swirls, not like the elaborate capitals that started her grandmother Anya’s letters. These were different, more deliberate, like a secret code whispered in ink. The header, she’d learned from her explorations in the attic, was often a bold statement, a title shouted from the rooftop of the page. But the footer, ah, the footer was a different story. It was the quiet hum beneath the surface, the gentle reminder of what lay beyond the main text, a subtle, almost shy presence.

She’d been poring over an old almanac, its pages brittle and smelling of dust and forgotten summers. The header announced the year with grand, blocky letters. The main text offered advice on planting potatoes and predicting the weather. But at the very bottom, almost lost in the fraying edge, were these curious marks. They looked like tiny, folded wings, or perhaps a stylized bird in flight. Today, however, a new symbol had appeared, nestled beside the familiar wing-like shapes. It was a small, perfect circle, like a single, unblinking eye.

“What do you think, Grandma?” Elshaday asked, her voice barely a breath as she held the almanac open for Anya. Her grandmother, her silver hair coiled neatly at the nape of her neck, peered over her spectacles, her eyes crinkling at the corners.
