Her fingers, usually sticky with paint or smudged with charcoal, moved with an unusual delicacy as she turned the pages. The symbols weren't random scribbles; they formed patterns, a language she was starting to recognize, a language that felt like it belonged to her. She remembered the peculiar squiggle that had made the wilting petunias on her windowsill perk up overnight, and the tiny, almost invisible line she’d drawn under a sad-looking cloud that had turned into a gentle shower, just enough to water the parched community garden.

“What are you looking at, little bird?” Grandmother Anya’s voice, soft as worn velvet, startled Elshaday. Anya stood in the doorway, a gentle smile playing on her lips, her eyes, the color of warm honey, crinkling at the corners.
