The attic dust motes danced in the lone shaft of sunlight, each one a tiny, glittering secret. Elshaday, her fingers smudged with ink and her mind buzzing with the day’s discoveries, felt a kinship with them. They floated, unseen by most, yet undeniably present, just like the whispers of the margin-speak. Grandmother Anya had been unusually quiet since Elshaday had shown her the journal, her eyes holding a depth Elshaday couldn’t quite fathom. It was a quiet that felt heavy, like the air before a storm.

“Grandmother,” Elshaday began, her voice soft, hesitant. She held the worn journal, its leather cover cool beneath her fingertips. “The symbols… they’re not just drawings, are they?”

Anya turned from the window, her gaze gentle, yet laced with a weariness that seemed to predate Elshaday’s own existence. She smoothed her apron, a familiar, comforting gesture. “No, child. They are more than drawings. They are the threads that weave the unseen tapestry of our world.” She gestured to the journal. “That book holds the wisdom of your ancestors, a language of intention, of subtle influence.”
