The air in the small, independent coffee shop was thick with the comforting aroma of roasted beans and the faint hum of hushed conversations. Elias Thorne, nursing a lukewarm americano, felt a prickle of unease. He’d been watching the entrance for ten minutes, his gaze flicking from the rain-streaked window to the door, the worn leather of the Serpent’s Balance Sheet tucked safely inside his satchel. He was supposed to be meeting an informant, someone who claimed to have information about the strange fluctuations he’d been noticing in the smaller, less scrutinized tech stocks – fluctuations that oddly mirrored some of the more obscure entries in the ledger.
The bell above the door chimed, and a woman stepped in, shaking droplets of rain from a stylish, dark trench coat. She was striking, with sharp, intelligent eyes that scanned the room with practiced efficiency. Elias’s stomach did a nervous flip. She wasn’t the rough-around-the-edges source he’d expected. This woman exuded an aura of quiet competence, the kind that made you feel slightly underdressed and inadequately prepared. She moved with a fluid grace, her gaze sweeping over the patrons, and then, as if drawn by an invisible thread, it landed on Elias.
A small, almost imperceptible smile touched her lips. She approached his table, her footsteps silent on the worn wooden floor. “Mr. Thorne?” Her voice was low, a melodious contralto that carried a hint of a French accent.
