Professor Finch’s study was a delightful chaos of overflowing bookshelves and teetering stacks of papers, each one seemingly on the verge of a grand collapse. Dust motes danced in the single shaft of sunlight that pierced the gloom, illuminating Elias’s concerned frown. He clutched the Serpent’s Balance Sheet, its smooth, cool leather a stark contrast to the frantic thumping of his own heart. Professor Finch, a man whose tweed jacket seemed to have absorbed the very essence of antiquity, peered at him over spectacles perched precariously on the end of his nose.
“So, Elias,” the professor began, his voice a warm rumble, like distant thunder, “you believe this… ledger, as you call it, is more than just a peculiar financial document?” He gestured towards the book with a gnarled finger, a hint of something more than mere academic curiosity in his bright blue eyes.
Elias nodded, his throat tight. “Professor, it’s… it’s predicting things. Not just market fluctuations, but the *why*. It’s like it knows the intentions behind the numbers. And the symbols… they match some of the older texts you showed me.” He swallowed hard. “The ones about the Serpent’s Coil.”
