Isabelle Moreau traced the condensation ring left by her untouched glass of sparkling water, the clink of ice a tiny, insistent drumbeat against the hushed elegance of the rooftop bar. Below, the city sprawled, a glittering tapestry of ambition and illusion, not so different from the world she navigated. Her phone, a sleek, black sliver of technology, lay face down on the polished marble tabletop, a silent sentinel to the pressures mounting within her.
“You’re late, Isabelle,” a voice, smooth and cold as glacial ice, purred from the shadows of a nearby cabana. Seraphina Dubois emerged, a silken shadow in a midnight blue gown, her smile as sharp as a perfectly cut diamond.
Isabelle’s breath hitched, a tiny, involuntary gasp. She hadn't expected Seraphina. Not here. Not now. Her carefully constructed composure threatened to unravel. “It was… a matter of some urgency,” she managed, her voice betraying none of the tremor she felt.
