His brow was furrowed, a familiar expression of intellectual pursuit, but tonight, it held a new undercurrent of concern, a shadow that mirrored the disquiet she felt blooming in her own chest.
“You say this happened again, Elara?” His voice was gentle, the kind that had soothed her through childhood fevers and adolescent anxieties. “The… sensation? The brief flash?”
She nodded, tracing the intricate pattern of the armchair’s upholstery with a fingertip. It was a small, almost unconscious gesture, but it was the kind of detail her mind now latched onto, the tangible amidst the swirling uncertainty. “It was like a… a jolt, Aris. Just for a second. I was making tea, and the kettle whistled, and for a moment, I wasn’t in my kitchen. I was somewhere else. Somewhere cold. And the sound wasn't a whistle, it was… a cry.”
