The scent of ozone and damp earth clung to me, a strange perfume that refused to dissipate even after I’d splashed cold water on my face. It was the smell of the place, the one I’d seen last night, the one that felt more real than the chipped porcelain of my sink. I traced the faint scar above my eyebrow, a remnant of a childhood fall, and then the phantom ache began, a dull throb behind my eyes. It was the echo, I was starting to call them, these insistent whispers from somewhere else.
Last night’s dream had been particularly sharp. Not the hazy, impressionistic kind that faded with the morning light, but a full-sensory immersion. I’d been standing on a windswept plain, the sky a bruised purple, the air thick with the promise of rain. And he was there. Not a figment of my imagination, not a fleeting shadow, but a solid presence. A man, his face etched with a weariness that went beyond mere fatigue, his eyes the colour of a stormy sea, holding a depth of knowledge that both unnerved and intrigued me.
He’d spoken, his voice a low rumble that seemed to vibrate in my very bones. “You’re getting closer, Elara,” he’d said, though I didn’t remember telling him my name. “Closer to the fraying edges.”
