Chapter 6
The Weaver's Gaze
A new, ethereal presence emerges in her dreams – The Weaver. This enigmatic entity speaks in riddles, its motives unclear, but its power is palpable, drawing Elara deeper into the tapestry.
The air in my apartment had begun to feel… thin. Not in a way that made it difficult to breathe, but as if the very substance of it was being stretched, like worn silk. It started subtly, after the dream of the starlit desert, a dream that had clung to me for days, its fine grit still seeming to settle in the creases of my mind. I’d catch a scent – ozone after a storm, the sweet, cloying perfume of night-blooming jasmine – when there was no storm and no jasmine to be found. Or a sound, a faint, melodic chime, like distant bells, that would vanish the moment I tried to pinpoint its source.
These were not the grand, terrifying visions of the previous weeks. These were whispers, fleeting brushstrokes on the periphery of my senses, so ephemeral I could almost dismiss them as tricks of light or fatigue. But they left a residue, a feeling of being watched, not by a person, but by something vast and indifferent, like the sky on a cloudless night. My own apartment, once a sanctuary of predictable order, now felt like a stage set, the familiar furniture and walls too solid, too *real*, in contrast to the shimmering uncertainty that had begun to seep into my days.
My reflection in the bathroom mirror seemed like a stranger for longer stretches. The lines around my eyes, the way my hair fell, the very set of my jaw – they were mine, undeniably, yet somehow alien. I’d touch my cheek, feeling the familiar warmth of my skin, but the sensation would be overlaid with another, a phantom coolness, like dew on a forgotten meadow. It was like trying to hold onto smoke.
