The air in the forgotten room hung thick and still, heavy with the scent of dust and decay. It was a place that time had seemingly overlooked, a forgotten pocket within the sprawling, abandoned house. The single, grimy window, choked with ivy, offered no hint of the outside world, only a murky, green-tinged gloom that seemed to press in on them. Leo’s flashlight beam, usually a brave beacon, wavered slightly as it swept across cobweb-draped furniture and peeling wallpaper that depicted faded scenes of pastoral bliss. Sam, ever the optimist, tried to whistle a jaunty tune, but it emerged as a reedy, uncertain sound that quickly died in the oppressive silence.

Maya, usually the picture of calm composure, felt a prickle of unease creep up her spine. The darkness here was different – deeper, more absolute than the playful shadows they had encountered earlier. It clung to the corners, seeped from the very floorboards, and seemed to whisper secrets she didn't want to hear. She took a shallow breath, her heart beginning to thrum a frantic rhythm against her ribs. Her hands, usually steady when examining a clue or sketching a map, felt clammy. She instinctively reached for Leo’s arm, her fingers brushing against his jacket.

Leo, caught up in his own surge of adrenaline and the thrill of the chase, barely registered the contact at first. They had been cornered, the older kids hot on their heels, and he had instinctively pulled Maya and Sam into this small, dark room, hoping to lose their pursuers. He’d slammed the creaky door shut, the sound echoing like a gunshot, and then the heavy silence had descended. He turned his flashlight beam towards Maya, his brow furrowed. "Are you okay, Maya?" he asked, his voice a little strained.
