Arthur Penhaligon, a man whose life thus far resembled a particularly clumsy ballet performed on a greased stage, found himself staring at a piece of paper. It wasn't just any paper; it was *the* paper, the one that held the fate of his academic aspirations, the one that represented a potential escape from the gilded cage of his current, albeit comfortable, mediocrity. The envelope, crisp and embossed with the dignified crest of Meadowbrook University, felt both impossibly light and crushingly heavy in his trembling hands. He’d opened it, of course, with the same hesitant grace he usually reserved for attempting to carry a full tray of drinks across a crowded room.

“Dear Mr. Penhaligon,” he read aloud, his voice a reedy whisper that seemed to get lost somewhere between his tonsils and the ceiling fan. “We are delighted to inform you…”

His eyes scanned the rest of the sentence, then the next, then a whole paragraph. The words swam, coalesced, and then, with a final, staggering lurch, reformed into something akin to meaning. He blinked. He re-read. He pinched himself. The sensation, sharp and undeniably real, confirmed he wasn't dreaming. And yet, what he was reading seemed to defy all logical probability, all the dire predictions of his Inner Critic, and indeed, all the evidence of his own life.
