Arthur Penhaligon stared at the blinking cursor, a tiny, mocking beacon in the vast, white expanse of the document. Chapter 17. The final chapter, not of his academic career, but of this particular, excruciating ordeal: the college application essay. He’d wrestled with it, he’d argued with it, he’d even, in a moment of spectacular desperation, tried to bribe it with lukewarm instant coffee. And now, here it was, a glorious, terrifying, and, he suspected, entirely unpublishable testament to his life’s most embarrassing moments.
He’d started with noble intentions, of course. Arthur Penhaligon, aspiring scholar, envisioned a profound narrative, a testament to his intellectual prowess, his leadership potential, his… well, his general awesomeness. But the Muse of Mishaps, that capricious sprite with a penchant for banana peels and misplaced commas, had other ideas. She’d nudged him, a gentle prod that sent him tumbling headfirst into a cascade of forgotten blunders.
There was the time in third grade when, convinced he was a budding magician, he’d attempted to make his hamster disappear. The hamster, bless its furry little heart, had merely burrowed deeper into its bedding, leaving Arthur with a handful of cedar shavings and a stern lecture from his mother about animal cruelty and the limitations of stage illusions. The Inner Critic, ever the helpful companion, had helpfully reminded him, in a voice dripping with condescension, that his ‘magic’ had only resulted in a small, furry creature’s existential dread.
