Arthur Penhaligon stared at the blinking cursor, which seemed to be mocking him with its relentless pulse. The blank page, once a void of infinite possibility, now felt like a gaping maw, ready to swallow him whole. Chapter 10, he thought grimly, felt more like Chapter 1 of his impending doom. He was supposed to be *reframing* fumbles, not drowning in them. The Muse of Mishaps, that capricious sprite who had so gleefully orchestrated his brainstorming session, had seemingly flitted off to a more fertile ground of societal collapse or perhaps a particularly juicy celebrity scandal. He was left alone with his Inner Critic, who was currently humming a jaunty, off-key rendition of "It's a Small World" while meticulously cataloging every instance Arthur had ever publicly embarrassed himself.
"Oh, look," the Critic sneered, its voice dripping with mock sympathy. "It's Arthur, the boy who once tripped over a perfectly flat rug and somehow managed to land in a bowl of spaghetti. A true testament to grace under pressure, wouldn't you say?"
Arthur winced. The Great Spaghetti Incident of '17. A culinary catastrophe that had cemented his reputation as a walking disaster zone. He’d been at a fancy dinner party, attempting to impress a girl who, in hindsight, probably just felt sorry for him. He'd reached for the bread basket, his elbow had connected with a precariously balanced bowl of carbonara, and the ensuing white sauce explosion had painted him, his date, and a significant portion of the tablecloth in shades of creamy, garlicky doom. He’d spent the rest of the evening trying to discreetly scrape pasta off his chin with a napkin, feeling like a particularly clumsy, sauce-covered ghost.
