Buckskin Dress

2 min read

The air hummed with the quiet industry of the women. Sunlight, dappled by the leaves of the cottonwoods, painted shifting patterns on the tanned hides stretched taut on wooden frames. It was the time of the buckskin dress, a creation born of necessity and elevated to an art form. Each hide, once a living part of the Great Bison, was now being transformed, its coarse texture softened, its scent a reminder of the wild freedom it once knew.

Elara, her fingers nimble and sure, guided a sharpened awl through the tough material, her needle following close behind, drawing sinew thread into place. Some were stitching intricate beadwork onto the yokes and cuffs, tiny jewels of glass reflecting the sunlight like scattered dew. Others meticulously scraped away any remaining imperfections, their movements economical and practiced. The air was filled with the scent of deer hide, of pine needles used for cleaning, and the faint, earthy aroma of rendered animal fat used to soften the leather.
