The taste of candy for the first time
The air was thick with the scent of woodsmoke and the earthy aroma of dried herbs, a familiar perfume that clung to the lodge. Young Anya, her eyes wide with a curiosity that often outpaced her years, sat cross-legged beside her grandmother, Nana Elara. Nana Elara, her fingers gnarled but nimble, was meticulously grinding seeds for a poultice, her movements a silent dance of generations. Anya, however, was captivated by a small, intricately carved wooden box that rested on a nearby shelf. It was a recent gift, brought back by a trader from a distant settlement, a place spoken of in hushed, almost mythical tones.
“Nana,” Anya began, her voice a soft whisper, “what is in the box?”
Nana Elara paused, her gaze lifting from her work. A gentle smile crinkled the corners of her eyes. “Ah, that. That is a curiosity, child. A taste of a world far beyond our own.” She gestured with her chin. “The trader said it held… sweetness.”
