The county jail was a squat, gray building on the outskirts of Millbrook, its walls stained with years of rain and neglect. Clara sat on a cold metal bench in a holding cell, her ankle throbbing where she had twisted it in the fall. The handcuffs had been removed, but her wrists still ached from the tight metal. Through the bars, she could see a narrow corridor leading to a desk where the two officers who had arrested her were speaking in low voices.

Clara had been in the cell for what felt like hours. No one had come to question her. No one had offered her water or told her what would happen next. She was alone with her thoughts, which were relentless. Leo had gotten away. That was the only thing that mattered. But where was he? Was he safe? Had he found shelter? And what would happen to her now?
