Chapter 5
Leo and Clara find refuge with Frank, but Frank secretly alerts the police. When officers arrive, Leo escapes into the woods, but Clara is captured and taken into custody.
The cabin behind Frank’s garage was small and dusty, but to Clara it felt like a sanctuary. A single room with a narrow bed, a wooden table, and a cold stove. Frank had brought them blankets and a loaf of bread, promising to return later with more supplies. Leo had fallen asleep almost immediately, his body heavy with exhaustion. Clara lay awake beside him, staring at the cracks in the ceiling, her mind racing with hope and fear.
She must have dozed off, because the next thing she knew, sunlight was streaming through the grimy window and Leo was shaking her shoulder.
“Clara. Wake up.”
