Three days had passed since Clara and Leo slipped into Oakridge. They had found a temporary refuge in a faded motel on the outskirts of town, paying cash for a room that smelled of mothballs and stale coffee. The bus they had planned to catch never came—a cancelled route due to construction—and they had been lying low ever since, waiting for the next opportunity to leave.

Each morning, Leo woke before dawn and paced the small room, peering through the curtain at the empty street. Clara watched him from the bed, her heart aching at the tension in his shoulders. She knew he was thinking about the police, about the life he had left behind, and about her.

On the third afternoon, as rain streaked the window, Leo sat on the edge of the bed and buried his face in his hands. Clara moved beside him and placed a hand on his back.
