Sarah's Plea

The audio recording is Sarah's desperate plea. She explains she's being held captive, forced to participate in the rituals, and warns Miles about the danger he's in.

The crackle of static filled the small room, a fragile sound that seemed to absorb the tense silence. Miles held the recorder, his knuckles white, his gaze fixed on the device as if it held the very essence of Sarah. It had been tucked away in the hidden compartment of the old oak tree, a place they’d built a fort as children, a sanctuary from the world. He’d almost missed it, almost dismissed the loose bark as just another sign of the woods reclaiming what was theirs. But Sarah, even in her absence, had a way of leaving breadcrumbs, of ensuring her voice wouldn’t be lost to the indifferent hum of time.

He pressed play. A soft whirring, then a voice, thin and reedy at first, like a breath caught on the wind. It was Sarah’s voice, undeniably, but stripped of its usual warmth, laced with a terror that clawed at Miles’s gut.

“Miles… if you’re hearing this, then… then I haven’t been forgotten.” The words were punctuated by shaky inhales. “I don’t know how much time I have, or how much of this they’ll let me say. But you have to understand. I’m not… I wasn’t kidnapped. Not in the way everyone thinks.”
