The biting wind whipped around Miles as he scrambled over the loose scree, his breath pluming in ragged bursts. Oakhaven’s woods were a relentless presence, their skeletal branches clawing at the bruised twilight sky. He’d followed the latest of Sarah’s breadcrumb trail – a faded symbol etched into the bark of an ancient oak, a symbol he’d only recognized from one of her childhood sketches, something she’d called “the eye of the stone.” It had led him here, to the base of a sheer cliff face, a place he vaguely remembered from his own youth, a place whispered about in hushed tones by the local kids as being ‘unlucky.’

He ran a gloved hand over the rough, cold stone, his eyes scanning for any anomaly. The symbol, barely visible now, seemed to point downwards, towards a dense thicket of brambles that clung stubbornly to the cliff’s base. With a sigh, Miles pushed aside the thorny branches, wincing as they snagged at his jacket. Behind the wall of green, a dark opening yawned, a jagged mouth in the rock. A cave.

He pulled out his flashlight, its beam cutting a bright swathe through the encroaching darkness. The air inside was damp and carried the scent of wet earth and something else… something faintly metallic, like old blood. His heart hammered a nervous rhythm against his ribs. This was it. This was the culmination of a week spent chasing shadows, piecing together fragments of a puzzle that seemed to grow more complex with every turn.
