The scent of rain-soaked earth clung to the air, a melancholic perfume that mirrored the heavy silence in the carriage. Annelise sat opposite Kaelen, the plush velvet seats doing little to soften the rigid line of her spine. Her gaze was fixed on the blurred landscape rushing past the window, but her mind replayed Lady Ashworth’s venomous words, each syllable a fresh lash. *“Such indiscretion, Lady Annelise. The whispers are deafening.”* The clatter of hooves on the cobbled lane was the only sound for a long moment, a relentless rhythm against the frantic beating of her own heart. She felt Kaelen’s eyes on her, a weight both comforting and deeply unsettling.

Finally, he spoke, his voice a low rumble that vibrated through the small space. “She knows.” It wasn't a question, but a statement of grim fact.

Annelise turned then, her eyes, usually the colour of a summer sky, stormy and shadowed. “She knows everything. Or rather, she *suspects* everything. Enough to ruin us.” The words were a bitter taste in her mouth. “She spoke of scandal, of my family’s honour, of yours. She implied… everything.” The implications hung in the air, thick and suffocating. The carefully constructed world they had inhabited, a world of stolen moments and clandestine touches, was crumbling around them.
