Chapter 5
Whispers of Betrayal
The intensifying affair puts their carefully constructed lives at risk as rumors begin to circulate within their social circle. A close confidante discovers their secret, threatening to expose them and bring scandal upon both families.
The scent of late-blooming jasmine, heavy and sweet, clung to the evening air as Annelise slipped through the wrought-iron gate of the old conservatory. A shiver, not entirely due to the cool October breeze, traced its way down her spine. Each rendezvous with Kaelen had become a delicate dance on the precipice of discovery, a thrilling, terrifying ballet performed under the cloak of night. Tonight, however, the thrill felt edged with a new, unsettling anxiety. Lately, the gentle hum of gossip seemed to have grown louder, its tendrils reaching, grasping, threatening to ensnare them.
Inside, the humid air of the conservatory embraced her like a lover’s sigh. Ornate ironwork climbed towards the vaulted glass ceiling, silhouetting the skeletal branches of dormant vines against the fading twilight. The air was thick with the earthy aroma of damp soil and the cloying sweetness of exotic orchids, their petals a riot of improbable colors. The sight of him, always a balm to her soul, tonight brought a fresh wave of trepidation.
He turned at her entrance, his eyes, the color of rich, dark earth, finding hers instantly. A small, knowing smile played on his lips, a secret shared between only them. He crossed the flagstone floor in three swift strides, pulling her into his embrace. His arms, strong and familiar, wrapped around her, molding her against the lean planes of his body. The scent of him – a subtle blend of sandalwood and something uniquely Kaelen – filled her senses, momentarily silencing the clamor of her anxieties.
