The scent of late-blooming jasmine, heavy and sweet, clung to the evening air as Annelise slipped through the wrought-iron gate of the old conservatory. A shiver, not entirely due to the cool October breeze, traced its way down her spine. He turned at her entrance, his eyes, the color of rich, dark earth, finding hers instantly. A small, knowing smile played on his lips, a secret shared between only them. He crossed the flagstone floor in three swift strides, pulling her into his embrace. His arms, strong and familiar, wrapped around her, molding her against the lean planes of his body.
