Chapter 9
The Cost of Control
The rebels uncover evidence of the Current's creators suppressing alternative energy sources. The narrative builds towards a confrontation over forgotten technologies.
The air in Jax’s den, a cramped space carved out of forgotten service tunnels beneath the city’s gleaming surface, hummed with a different kind of energy. It wasn’t the steady thrum of the Current, but a chaotic symphony of whirring processors, crackling data streams, and the low, guttural growl of overloaded ventilation. Their faces, illuminated by the shifting blues and greens of the data, were etched with a shared, unsettling discovery.
“It’s worse than we thought, Elara,” Kael said, his voice a low rumble that vibrated in the confined space. He gestured towards the display, where schematics of intricate energy conduits intertwined with faded, almost archaic, blueprints. “They didn’t just build the Current. They actively dismantled alternatives. Suppressed them.”
