The silence was the first thing Elara noticed. Not the gentle hum of the Current, the ever-present thrum that had underscored every moment of her existence, but a stark, profound absence of it. It was as if the very air had been hollowed out, leaving a vacuum that pressed in on her eardrums. The city, usually a symphony of soft light and ambient energy, was plunged into a patchy, unsettling twilight. Buildings that had glowed with an internal luminescence were now stark silhouettes against a bruised sky.

Panic, a cold, sharp thing, began to prickle at the edges of her consciousness. This wasn't the controlled flicker she’d experienced weeks ago, a mere hiccup in her personal supply. This was a systemic failure, a vast, gaping wound torn through the heart of the Current. Her datapad, usually a beacon of information, was stubbornly blank. The streetlamps, normally a steady, reassuring glow, flickered intermittently, casting long, dancing shadows that played tricks on the eyes.

People spilled from their hab-units, their faces etched with a mixture of fear and confusion. Whispers, urgent and laced with dread, rippled through the growing crowds. “The Current… it’s gone.” “What’s happening?” “Are we… unplugged?”
