The air in the Central Hub screamed. Not with sound, but with a silent, vibrating terror that resonated through Elara’s bones. Alarms, usually a polite hum, now shrieked in a cacophony of panicked frequencies. Lights, meant to be a constant, reassuring glow, strobed erratically, painting the vast, cavernous space in shades of violent red and stark white. The sabotage attempt, a brutal, desperate lunge at the very heart of their world, had been averted, but the cost was etched into the very fabric of the Current.

Seraphina stood beside Elara, her usual immaculately composed demeanor fractured. Her face, usually a mask of calm authority, was pale, her eyes wide with a horror Elara had never witnessed. “We contained it,” Seraphina breathed, her voice raspy, as if she’d been screaming for hours. “We contained the cascade. But… look at it.”

Elara looked. The core, the nexus of pure, shimmering energy that powered the entire planet, pulsed with an unstable, bruised light. Tendrils of darkness, like creeping rot, snaked through what should have been a flawless, iridescent flow. The intricate latticework of conduits that fed the world’s energy was scarred, some sections entirely severed, others flickering with the sickly yellow of dying embers. It was a wound, deep and ragged, and Elara knew, with a chilling certainty, that it would never truly heal.
