Chapter 10
Sabotage Imminent
A critical piece of the Current's infrastructure is targeted. The threat of a global blackout looms, forcing Elara and the rebels into a desperate race against time.
The hum of the Current was the city’s heartbeat, a constant, low thrum that vibrated through the ferro-concrete and into Elara’s very bones. For twenty-two years, it had been the only lullaby she’d ever known. Tonight, however, the city’s pulse felt irregular, like a runner’s breath catching in their throat. The usual steady flow of energy that illuminated her small apartment, powered her nutrient dispenser, and kept the air at a comfortable twenty-two degrees Celsius, seemed to falter. Not a full blackout, not yet, but a series of hesitations, a momentary stutter in the universal song.
Elara frowned, her fingers tracing the condensation on the transparisteel window. Outside, the towering spires of Neo-Veridia shimmered, their lights usually a solid, unwavering beacon against the perpetual twilight. But tonight, they flickered, brief, almost imperceptible blinks that nonetheless sent a prickle of unease down her spine. Her personal energy monitor, a sleek band on her wrist, glowed a steady, reassuring green, but the subtle shifts in the city’s ambiance were undeniable. She’d felt this before, a fleeting anomaly a few weeks ago, a brief dip that had vanished as quickly as it appeared. It was rare, almost unheard of, for the Current to falter, its engineers priding themselves on its absolute, unyielding stability.
Suddenly, a piercing alarm shrieked through the apartment, a jarring dissonance that ripped through the familiar hum. Her personal monitor flashed an angry crimson, its display now a chaotic jumble of error codes. The lights in her apartment died, plunging her into an inky blackness that was both unnerving and suffocating. The nutrient dispenser went silent, its soft whirring replaced by an unnerving stillness. Outside, the city’s lights winked out in a cascading wave, then sputtered back to life, dimmer than before, their once vibrant glow reduced to a sickly, flickering pallor. Panic, cold and sharp, began to bloom in Elara’s chest. This was no mere flicker. This was a visceral, terrifying interruption.
