The roar of the crowd, a tidal wave of digital adulation, had barely begun to recede when Will felt the first tremor of unease. The Grand Tournament was over. He’d won. Anya, despite her initial wariness, had offered a grudging, almost imperceptible nod of respect as he’d accepted the legendary mech, the ‘Aegis of Aethelred,’ a behemoth of polished obsidian and humming energy. Silas Vance, his smug sneer replaced by a mask of barely concealed fury, had vanished into the throng, promising retribution Will suspected would be more insidious than direct.
Yet, as Will stood on the victor’s platform, the weight of the Aegis’s schematic heavy in his digital pouch, a cold dread seeped into his bones. Something felt… off. The victory, so hard-won, so gloriously satisfying, tasted strangely hollow. He’d expected a triumphant return to his cramped, neon-lit apartment, a week of blissful indulgence in questionable online content, and a smug counting of his newly acquired credits. Instead, his gaze kept drifting to the periphery, to the hushed conversations of cloaked figures in the VIP boxes, to the unnerving stillness of the tournament organizers as they packed away the holographic trophies.
"Enjoying your spoils, Will?" Anya’s voice, cool and measured, cut through the lingering din. She stood a few paces away, her own mech, a sleek, crimson predator named ‘Crimson Fury,’ gleaming under the arena lights. Her expression was unreadable, a familiar blend of skepticism and something akin to grudging admiration.
