Chapter 17
A Pyrrhic Victory?
Will defeats Silas, but at a cost. Perhaps his prize mech is damaged, his reputation is tarnished by the fight's brutality, or he realizes the true weight of his actions.
The roar of the crowd was a physical force, a tidal wave of sound that crashed against Will’s eardrums. He stood in the shattered remnants of the arena, the dust still settling around him, the acrid smell of burnt metal and ozone thick in the air. Silas Vance, or what was left of him, was a heap of twisted chrome and sparking wires at his feet. The Serpent’s pride, his prized custom-built ‘Obsidian Serpent,’ was now nothing more than scrap. Will had done it. He’d actually done it. He’d beaten Silas.
A grin, wide and a little manic, spread across Will’s face. He’d envisioned this moment a thousand times in the lonely hours spent hunched over his flickering screen, fueled by instant noodles and desperation. He’d imagined the cheers, the adulation, the sweet, sweet taste of victory. But this… this was something else entirely. The sheer, unadulterated power that had surged through him as his own mech, the ‘Crimson Comet,’ had delivered the final blow, was intoxicating. It was a feeling far more potent than any virtual high he’d ever chased.
He raised a gauntleted hand, the metal groaning in protest. The Crimson Comet was also a wreck. A gaping hole marred its chest plate, and one of its articulated legs was bent at an impossible angle. The final, devastating energy blast from Silas’s mech had nearly cleaved him in two. He’d gambled everything on that last, desperate maneuver, a suicidal charge that had paid off, but at a steep price. He felt a dull ache radiating from his own battered body, a testament to the brutal reality of mech combat, even when piloting from the safety of his cockpit.
