The air in the Celestial Sea grew thin, not with cold, but with an unearthly stillness that pressed in on Kael’s very bones. The star-dust shimmered, each mote a tiny, silent witness to his internal turmoil. He saw it again, as he had seen it countless times in the quiet hours of the night, the memory that clung to him like frostbite. The harvest festival, the frantic cries, the collapsing bridge. He had been too slow, too hesitant, paralyzed by a sudden, overwhelming fear. A child, reaching out a tiny hand, had been lost in the churning waters below. The weight of that failure had settled upon him, a heavy cloak he’d worn ever since, muffling his own instincts, urging him towards caution above all else.
Elara sensed his distress. She reached out, her fingers brushing his arm. “Kael? Are you alright? You’ve gone so pale.”
He flinched, not from her touch, but from the sudden proximity of his buried pain. “I… I am well, Elara. Just… the stars are disorienting.” It was a lie, and the falseness tasted bitter on his tongue. Finn, ever perceptive beneath his jests, shot Kael a worried glance.
