Candice surveyed the wreckage of her living room, a battlefield of misplaced enthusiasm. A half-knitted scarf, a casualty of an overly ambitious purl stitch, lay draped over a teetering tower of romance novels. A rogue cushion, evidently launched during a particularly impassioned reading of a dramatic passage, nestled forlornly in the fireplace. It was, she mused, a fitting reflection of her current emotional state: a delightful mess.

Antoine’s silence had been a deafening roar in her ears. After their disastrously delightful double date, where she’d managed to spill an entire glass of red wine on the pristine white tablecloth and he’d somehow gotten his tie caught in the bread basket, she’d expected… something.
