Candice, perched on the edge of her seat as if preparing for a sudden eruption of spaghetti, smoothed her already perfectly smooth dress for the tenth time. Across from her, Antoine mirrored her nervous energy, his fingers drumming a silent, erratic rhythm on the crisp white tablecloth. Chloe, radiating the triumphant glow of a general who’d just orchestrated a brilliant military strategy, beamed from her position next to her date, a man named Julien whose primary conversational topic seemed to be the optimal temperature for artisanal cheeses.

“Isn’t this just *divine*?” Chloe chirped, her voice a little too loud for the intimate setting. “Candice, you and Julien are hitting it off, I can just tell. And Antoine, Julien’s cousin, is *such* a catch. He’s practically a minimalist philosopher.”

Candice managed a smile that felt as strained as a tightrope walker’s grin. Julien, bless his cheese-loving heart, had just spent five minutes explaining the nuanced differences between Gruyère and Emmental, complete with sound effects. Antoine, meanwhile, had managed to spill water twice, once onto his own lap and once perilously close to Candice’s designer handbag. He offered a sheepish, apologetic shrug, his eyes crinkling at the corners.
