The air in the old library, even with the windows flung wide, hung thick and stagnant, a testament to decades of forgotten stories and the dust they had accumulated. John traced the faded ink on the brittle page, his finger hovering over a passage that spoke of a ‘confluence of sorrow and rage.’ It was in these forgotten tomes, these brittle whispers of the past, that he felt closest to the truth, closest to understanding the insidious rot that had taken root in Brykoon. Beside him, Jack, ever the pragmatist, coughed, the sound a harsh interruption in the hushed reverence of the room.

“Anything, John?” Jack’s voice was low, tinged with a weariness that had settled deep in his bones over the past few weeks. The weight of their failed ritual, the subsequent surge of inexplicable violence that had gripped the town, clung to them like a shroud. The news reports, a grim litany of bizarre accidents and senseless acts, played on a loop in John’s mind, each one a fresh stab of guilt.

John shook his head, his gaze still fixed on the text. “Fragments. Always fragments. They talk about a sacred grove, a place where the veil between worlds was thin. And a betrayal. A deep, ancient betrayal.” He looked up, his eyes, usually alight with fierce intelligence, were now shadowed with an almost desperate intensity. “It’s not just about the recent events, Jack. It’s older. Much, much older.”
