The air in Felix’s cluttered study hung thick with the scent of aged paper and forgotten incense. Dust motes danced in the single shaft of sunlight that pierced the gloom, illuminating the grim faces of John, Jack, and Alex. The weight of the previous night’s failure pressed down on them, a suffocating blanket woven from the screams of the innocent and the chilling realization of their own inadequacy. The ritual, meant to be their salvation, had become a conduit for the curse’s wrath.

John, his eyes hollowed with a grief that went beyond mere loss, traced the faded script of an ancient tome. His fingers, usually steady and precise, trembled. “We were too… arrogant,” he murmured, the words a confession more than an observation. “We thought we understood. We thought we could force it, bend it to our will.”

Jack, his usual pragmatism frayed at the edges, scrubbed a hand over his face. “Arrogant doesn’t even begin to cover it, John. We unleashed hell. Those families… God, John.” His voice cracked, the raw pain of witnessing such carnage evident in every syllable. He’d always been the anchor, the steady hand, but the events of the past few days had shaken him to his core. The memory of Mrs. Henderson’s vacant stare, clutching the scorched remnants of her child’s toy, was a brand on his soul.
