The air in the inner sanctum of the temple hung thick and still, a palpable silence that pressed in on Conley’s ears. He turned the amulet over in his calloused hands, its obsidian surface cool and unnervingly smooth. Runes, etched in a script he didn’t recognize, pulsed with a faint, internal light, a ghostly echo of the power that thrummed beneath his fingertips. This was it, the prize the client had paid handsomely for, the object that had led him through treacherous jungles and into the heart of this forgotten place. He’d expected treasure, perhaps an idol of some long-dead deity, but this… this felt different. It hummed with a barely contained energy, a promise of something far greater, or far more terrible.

"Impressive, isn't it?"

The voice, smooth as polished stone and sharp as a shard of ice, slithered through the silence, making the hairs on Conley’s arms prickle. He didn’t flinch, his grip tightening on the amulet, his sword already a familiar weight in his other hand. Years of dealing with the unexpected had honed his reflexes to a razor's edge. He didn't need to see his opponent to know he was there. The shift in the air, the subtle displacement of dust motes, the predatory stillness that preceded a strike – all spoke of a seasoned warrior.
