The air in the dilapidated shack was thick with the scent of dust and forgotten things, a perfume that clung to me like a second skin. Outside, the Arkansas sun beat down with relentless fervor, but inside, a perpetual twilight reigned, broken only by the slivers of light that pierced the grimy windowpanes. Silas, the reclusive associate, sat hunched on a stool, his gnarled hands twisting a scrap of oil-stained cloth. The map lay spread between us, a spiderweb of faded ink on brittle parchment, and the key, cold and heavy in my palm, felt like both a promise and a threat.
“They wanted it all buried, John,” Silas rasped, his voice like dry leaves skittering across a barren field. “Your name, your history, everything. They didn’t just want to keep you from the inheritance; they wanted to make you disappear, a ghost before you even drew your first breath.”
I traced the lines of the map, a labyrinth of forgotten roads and obscure landmarks. It led away from North Little Rock, away from the town that had been my entire world, and into the unknown. “Why go to all this trouble?” I asked, the question a familiar ache in my chest. “What was so important about this… inheritance?”
