The coded messages, once deciphered, led me not to a dusty archive or a forgotten library, but to a ramshackle cabin nestled deep in the piney woods, miles from the nearest paved road. The air here was thick with the scent of damp earth and decaying leaves, a far cry from the sterile predictability of North Little Rock. My heart hammered a frantic rhythm against my ribs, a drumbeat of anticipation and a gnawing dread. Each step on the overgrown path felt like a step further into the unknown, a plunge into the murky depths of my own history.
The cabin itself was a study in neglect. The wood was weathered to a silver-grey, the roof sagged like an old man’s shoulders, and a single, grimy window seemed to stare out with a vacant, weary eye. A wisp of smoke curled from a crooked chimney, the only sign of life in this desolate corner of the world. I hesitated at the threshold, the silence pressing in on me, broken only by the distant caw of a crow and the frantic thumping in my own chest. This was it. The culmination of weeks spent hunched over cryptic scribbles, chasing shadows and whispers.
Taking a deep breath, I knocked. The sound echoed, swallowed by the oppressive stillness. A moment passed, then another. Just as I was about to turn away, convinced I’d followed a phantom trail, the door creaked open, revealing a sliver of a shadowed interior. A face emerged, etched with a thousand lines of worry and suspicion. The eyes, a piercing blue that seemed to bore straight through me, narrowed as they took me in.
