Chapter 6
Roots and Resilience
In the quiet comfort of their own home, the family begins to put down roots. The echoes of their arduous journey – the grief, the homelessness, the constant uncertainty – remain, but they are now woven into a tapestry of strength and resilience. They reflect on the past six months of Airbnb living and the subsequent three years of shelter, recognizing the profound lessons learned and the unbreakable bonds forged through adversity. With faithful prayers answered and a renewed sense of hope, they celebrate their enduring love, their shared strength, and the powerful testament to their faith that guided them through the darkest of times, proving that even after the deepest losses, life can bloom anew.
The scent of freshly brewed coffee, a simple aroma that had once been a luxury, now filled the air of their new home. La Shele breathed it in, a quiet exhale of relief that felt as deep as the grief she still carried for Tyon, Kiara and her dear Aunt Kathleen. Their life was finally settling. It had been a long road, a path paved with uncertainty and heartache, and now, here they were. Home.
She watched Chacobe humming softly as he buttered toast, his movements steady and familiar. His quiet strength had been an anchor, a constant presence in the storm. He was a strong man taking more than double the loss in his own life of close relatives before meeting La Shele. This man walked faithfully with God, before and after the loss of his daughter Kiara. He had to be the strong tower for this family.bHe lifted and guided them all though grief and sorrow had hit them all. Chacobe heled bring them out. Kae Keonna’s laughter, a bright melody, drifted from the living room where she was undoubtedly entertaining her children, her innate ability to find joy a beacon in their darkest days. Even Cynthia, usually so reserved, was visible through the doorway, a rare smile gracing her lips as she watched the grandchildren play. La Shele chuckled, a soft, melodic sound. "And then there was the one day where the Wi-Fi was so bad, Chacobe almost had a meltdown trying to get it to work." They had called the cable company, and a new box had been brought out, and all was well.
The next journey was a period of slow, steady rebuilding. Nice breakfast, lunches, dinners, movies, snacks, and pool time with the grandchildren at their new home. Their new place became their mansion, a place where they could begin to heal. La Shele poured her energy into creating frames for friends and family, a piece of art work of her very own, tending to the grandchildren, filling the space with the sounds of laughter and gospel music. Kae Keonna flourished, becoming a college graduate, c/o 2024, with a degree in nurse assisting, blossoming in every way possible, her laughter once again a constant presence. Malik was out of prison around this time for one year seven months. His dreams of driving trucks still a distant whisper, he found solace in his family, his protective instincts a comforting shield. Chacobe and Cynthia retired with illnesses. Cynthia had to have knee surgery in January 2026 and La Shele was their caregiver and daycare provider for her grandchildren.
